Most people will experience some form of trauma in their lifetime whether it is a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden death of a loved one, a violent criminal act, exposure to the violence of war, or a natural disaster.

Signs and symptoms of PTSD

Intrusion Symptoms

  • Recurring unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event
  • Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening (flashbacks)
  • Upsetting dreams or nightmares
  • Emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the traumatic event

Avoidance Symptoms

  • Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event
  • Avoiding specific locations, situations, activities, sights, and sounds that remind you of the traumatic event

Negative Changes in Mood and Cognition

  • Difficulty remembering details of the traumatic event
  • Negative thoughts about yourself, other people, or the world
  • Hopelessness about the future
  • Loss of interest in activities that were once considered enjoyable
  • Change in habits or behavior since the traumatic event
  • Difficulty maintaining close relationships
  • Feeling detached from family and friends
  • Difficulty experiencing positive emotions
  • Feeling emotionally numb

Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions (Arousal Symptoms)

  • Being easily startled or frightened
  • Always being on guard for danger
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior
  • Self-destructive or reckless behavior, including self-harm, such as drinking too much or driving too fast

Many people can recover from trauma over time with the love and support of family and friends and bounce back with resiliency.

Some people may experience long-lasting effects of trauma, including deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or posttraumatic stress. In these circumstances, the support, guidance and assistance of a therapist is fundamental to healing from trauma.
